Welcome to the Saginaw County Prevention Coalition

Founded by our beloved community of youth, families, schools, libraries, coaches, emergency personnel, faith-based organizations, businesses, and civic groups, the Saginaw County Prevention Coalition (SCPC) partners with over twenty organizations and initiatives in and around Saginaw County, Michigan, to help reduce youth substance misuse and build a brighter future for our entire community.

Saginaw County Prevention Coalition

SCPC is a community coalition of youth, parents, schools, coaches, librarians, doctors, nurses, police officers, faith based organizations, business owners, civic groups, and community members who want to prevent youth substance use.

Our Saginaw community have organized a SCPC coalition. Together, the SCPC has more than 1,000 volunteers donating time and energy. Anyone age 10 and up can join by working on a project, helping at an event, or coming to a meeting. Our strength comes from our members as we work to create positive changes in our community

  • We will construct and promote a sustainable and effective substance misuse program that provides Saginaw-area youth and their families with the services and resources needed to better their lives.
  • Create a safe and compassionate collaboration space. Community-building and engagement. Diversity and inclusion. Joining other coalition efforts. Open communication. Trust. Transparency.
  • Reduce underage alcohol use. Reduce youth marijuana use. Expand the SCPC’s capacity through partnerships. Spread awareness of youth substance misuse prevention in the Saginaw area.
  • To successfully decrease youth substance misuse in the Saginaw area, our dedicated partners— from organizations to individuals—execute a shared and organized effort thorough community planning, promoting evidence-based approaches, reflecting on past approaches, creating stronger approaches based on past results, expanding community services and resources, and using local and state-level data to guide efforts.

Relevant for Community

Kids who use drugs or alcohol are more likely to have problems with school, health, family, friends, and law enforcement.

They’re more likely to get in physical fights and car crashes. They’re more likely to suffer from memory and learning problems. They’re more likely to engage in high risk sexual behavior. And the earlier they start using, the more likely they are to develop addiction.

YOUTH SUBSTANCE MISUSE IN THE UNITED STATES

In 2020, around 4.1% of Americans aged 12-17 (nearly 11.4 million) claimed they binge drank in the past month, while roughly 10.1% (nearly 28 million) reported using marijuana within the past year.

POTENTIAL YOUTH SUBSTANCE MISUSE RISKS

Several risks may occur from youth substance abuse, including—
Poor academic performance
Relationship conflicts
Lower activity participation
Interference of physical and mental development (long-term damage may result)
Problematic sexual activity
Higher mental illness
Violence
Legal conflicts
Harmful accidents or death
Adulthood substance misuse addiction
Other substance misuse
